Title: Biofouling removal from ultrafilters

Problem: An in-house waste treatment plant with ultrafiltration kept experiencing rapid fouling of their filters causing excessive need to take the system out of service for cleaning. It was suspected that microbes were growing inside the system and rapidly clogging the pores of the filter.

Solution: The use of a 1% Terg-a-zyme enzyme cleaning solution at 120 deg F temperature maintained by an immersion heater in the sump during a three hour clean-in-place program of 20 minutes circulate, 20 minutes stop and soak, 20 minutes circulate followed by a thorough rinse as a pre-treatment effectively removed the biofouling and restored the filters to their normal length of service.
